Bible commentary

Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. To protect ourselves from the capital sin of pride, and to save others from the sin of envy, we can rejoice in the Limitless generosity and care of our Heavenly Father. Tell everyone, as Elizabeth did, that everything good that takes place in our lives comes from God’s mercy, and it is available to everyone. Invite friends and family and celebrate together what good things God has dome for you.

Circumcision of John the Baptist

59 So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. 60 His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.” God talks to us through our conscience, sudden revelations and godly thoughts. The Holy Spirit revealed to Elizabeth the name God chose for her child, while her husband could not speak. 61 But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called. Even though Elizabeth’s pregnancy was an evident miracle, and even though she shared her joy with friends and family, those people oppressed her for having a different opinion and for being a female. Despite Elizabeth’s blessed state and generosity to them, the people closest to her were outraged and they asked her husband to rule over his wife’s wish. They didn’t know any better for being human, they were weak and fallible. This demonstrates that we should make our primary relationship with God, depend only on Him. Expect human weakness and pray for everyone.

63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. The sin of pride blinded friends and family. They wanted the child to be named after them and they expected the father to likewise wish to build his ego in this manner. However God is more important than honor, pride, public opinion and relationships. Humility and obedience are virtues. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. The first words Zacharia uttered after almost a year of not being able to speak, were praises to God. When we feel better form a headache or any sickness, we should follow Zacharia and glorify The Lord aloud and immediately. 65 Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66 And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him. Zacharias’ muteness was a blessing in that it confirmed, yet again, John’s birth as a miracle. His muteness also stopped the family argument over the child’s name and the company’s disregard for Elizabeth’s opinion. Trust God, He is the complete and full expression of goodness. Even when a predicament seems unfortunate, God can use it for good.
